What We Do
Mycela matches seasoned entrepreneurial operators with climate and conservation teams that have the science but need someone to build the path to scale.
Managed Engagements
Most PopularThey build the business plan, financial model, delivery system, fundraising materials, whatever is standing between a working pilot and an organization that can grow.
A diagnostic conversation to learn more about the work and assess mutual fit, then a written proposal if there is a fit.
A short call, no preparation needed. We want to hear what you are working on, what has already been tried, and where it keeps getting stuck. If we are not the right answer, we will recommend resources or make introductions elsewhere.
If there's a fit, we draft a brief proposal to set shared expectations on scope, timing, and cost before anything is committed.
For teams who want a low-risk entry point to work with Mycela.
First, your entrepreneurial operator conducts a focused discovery phase combining 5–10 targeted interviews with a structured review of existing materials to establish a shared, current-state understanding of the work and its scalability.
Then the Mycela team facilitates a 2-hour Scaling Bootcamp, bringing together the operator and core team members to work through what they've found. The goal: assess scalability, surface key constraints and enablers, and define clear next steps toward a scalable strategy and delivery model.
For teams that have alignment on a scaling direction and are ready to move from planning into action (i.e. testing concepts, launching pilots, or operationalizing a near-term scaling plan) but need dedicated capacity to do so quickly and well.
An operator embeds with the team to operationalize, test, and build momentum around the scaling priorities. Outputs vary based on team needs and scaling focus, and may include:
Once the operator is embedded, we stay close. Weekly 1:1s with the operator, monthly check-ins with your team, and bi-monthly pulse surveys to catch what doesn't come up in meetings. If something's off, we adjust fast. When the engagement wraps, we check back at 6 and 12 months to see if what was built is still standing.
Direct Recruiting
For teams that know what role they need and are ready to hire and manage directly. We run our full vetting process and deliver a shortlist of 2–3 matched candidates. You meet carefully matched operators in days, not months.
Start with a 30-minute scoping call. We'll learn about your organization, the role, and how you'd like to work together, including a rough budget range and who on your team should be involved. If there's a fit, we move fast.
Every team is different. Some want a shortlist of vetted names and will take it from there. Others want us to run the whole process end to end and hand over a single recommended candidate. We'll propose an involvement level based on your scoping call:
Shortlist ($, Least Involvement)
We source and vet candidates, then hand you roughly 20–30 to review and interview. The list reflects fit against the role, not confirmed availability or interest.
Shortlist + Screening ($$)
We add initial screening calls, narrowing to around 10 candidates with confirmed availability, interest, and a strong match to the profile.
Shortlist + Interviews ($$$)
We handle sourcing, screening, and one or more rounds of interviews, delivering candidates at whatever stage and volume is most useful to your team.
Full Selection ($$$$, Most Involvement)
We manage the entire process and hand you a single recommended candidate, ready for your sign-off.
Once we align on scope, our team builds a hiring heuristic with your team, defining exactly who we're looking for. Then we go find them. Sourcing difficulty varies by geography and skill set, and we price accordingly. If screening or interviews are part of the scope, we run short calls to confirm background, availability, and fit before anyone reaches your desk.
From the Field
Featured Case Studies
Ceiba Earth
Validated tropical-forest carbon science and early buyer interest, ready for an execution layer. Over an 8-week trial, the operator built the model, investor materials, and fundraising pipeline, then became full-time co-founder and COO.

Farming for the Future
Strong science and deep advisory networks, but no scalable commercial model. Six months later: validated farmer demand and advisor channel partnerships in motion.

FAQs
Consultants deliver a report and leave. Our operators join your team and do the work alongside you, building the actual models, systems, and materials, not a set of recommendations. They're also a fraction of the cost of a traditional firm.
We run a rigorous process: phone screen, live case study, career deep-dive, behavioral interview, reference checks. About 3% of applicants make the cut. Then we hand-pick for your specific challenge. You're not scrolling through profiles. We bring you the match.
Talent Profile Example →Yes. Most teams start with a Discovery & Scaling Bootcamp scope before committing to a full engagement. We've also scoped shorter packages for teams with a specific, bounded question, like testing whether a funding pathway is real before building a whole strategy around it.
Rates vary widely globally to reflect local market compensation. U.S. based operators work at $85–125/hour USD, roughly 2–5x less than comparable consulting firms. A short engagement might run $5K–$15K USD. A full multi-month engagement typically falls in the $20K–$70K USD range depending on hours and duration. We can scope to your budget.
We've run engagements across North America, Latin America, Australia, Asia Pacific, and Africa, and we recruit operators globally.
All Mycela operators are fluent in English, and may be fluent in additional languages. If your team works in a language other than English, we match for that.
Depends on the engagement. Some are building financial models and investor decks. Others are running stakeholder interviews, testing pricing with customers, or designing a delivery system for a new geography. They're generalists: the kind of person who can build a spreadsheet in the morning and facilitate a difficult conversation in the afternoon.
Let’s talk. It’s common for science-based leaders to start with "we need more data." But often the real question, "who cares about this, and how would they partner?", needs to happen alongside the research, not after it. We typically suggest starting with a low-commitment 2-hour Scaling Bootcamp. If the internal scaffolding isn’t in place yet, if leadership isn’t aligned or the scope isn’t clear, we’ll tell you. We’ve walked away from engagements that weren’t set up to succeed, and we think that’s a feature, not a failure.
We keep a close eye on the engagement and help you adjust if needed. Monthly team check-ins, bi-monthly pulse surveys, and a weekly 1:1 with the operator means if something's off, we can course-correct fast. We've ended engagements or swapped operators early when the fit wasn't right. We'd rather have an uncomfortable conversation than let something impact the work.
Our operators are used to complex environments. They have high EQ, they know how to navigate disagreement without taking sides, and they learn what will land in your context before they suggest anything. We scope who they talk to, how updates get shared, and what's off-limits during onboarding.
Yes, and it happens regularly. More than half our engagements get extended, and several operators have transitioned into full-time leadership roles, including as a co-founder or COO.
